There’s always something new (online) with me each week, but taking the time to get on here and update is my challenge. This week I was busy pulling together a new paper.li page, updating a squidoo page I’d totally forgotten I had, and creating a very personal blog article that included photos and results of my health journey over the last 17 months. Let me show you:
This post, at FromKarlyn.com, was the result of a personal lifestyle change and transformation I experienced over the last – almost year and a half. The changes I made were “drastic” i think some may say, but to me – they were necessary, important and could even have saved my life. I go into great detail of what changes I made and how they affected me, over the last few years. I include a before and after photo too. Writing this post was therapeutic too, as it made me go back and examine some things I hadn’t recalled in some time. Showing and sharing my “before” photo was hard though. The photo still makes me sad, but at the same time, I’m thankful I finally work up from the unhealthy funk I was in for way too long! I’m a total newb to Paper.li. When I checked out the site for the first time this week; I was intrigued with it’s purpose. The template allows you to create your own online newspaper. Fill it with content from your own sources, a friends, favorite places online, etc. The site pulls content from the URL’s you feed it, including an image. You have control over how you want it displayed and the frequency of your newspaper’s updates. Visitors can subscribe to stay updated with the new content displayed each day, weekly, or whatever. One of the most impressive things I noted right away was now seriously easy the system is to use. There are no complicated controls the newbie will get lost in. Use the handy + Paper.li shortcut for your browser and pin content effortlessly in seconds while you browse the www. Silly me, but I’d attempted this Squidoo a few years ago and then got side-tracked. So; I took the opportunity this week to spend some quality time with it. My main Squidoo is about Karlyns across the web. The name itself is not too common as you may have guessed, so I shared some info about the different Karlyns I’ve met online since 2004, “Karlyn” products that are featured online, and then of course own sites that feature the name. There’s a poll there and some other fun stuff too. Squidoo’s have been around for a while now. If you are not familiar with the site, it’s a handy tool for people who want to share all kinds of ideas. You can create pages, called “Lenses”, about practically any topic under the sun. There are a lot of layout configurations, addons and widgets you can include along with your basic topic title and description, but it’s not overwhelming. It’s totally free and allows the user a good, quality way to get there content online for all to view.I do work full time in retail by the way, but when I get home from work, I get busy with my “fun work”, which is my websites, my blogging, my freelance advertising and design work, etc.. I love it. So each week, I continue to update my other websites.. .com’s I’ve had since 2000. The following sites all have some worthwhile updates of their own that I hope you’ll take a moment to check out as well. They may not be featured like my top-three above, but they are nonetheless important to me. They are all my babies.. lol.

Have you had one of those days where you seem to be doing nothing but sitting in your office handling case after case of work that seems to have a disturbingly mundane pattern ? Have you had one of those days when it seems that the pattern you’ve somehow settled in can’t and won’t be changed, and the people you see everyday remain the same, the things they talk about seem repetitive, even the meals you eat seem to taste the same ? The truth is, we all stumble upon days like those. The good news though, is that you can do something to liven up your daily routine, and it doesn’t even require you to step out of your office or home sometimes.
The internet may be a rich source of information, but it is also an intriguing platform for meeting people. There are a plethora of places that people can go to to seek some distraction from the demands of work. Sometimes, just getting online to play an online game could ease the day’s tension whilst you allow your mind to take a breather and relax. It is understandable that you might worry about falling into the trap of gaming addiction, but there are simple games out there that do a wonderful job of giving you 15 minutes of relaxation. Partybingo.com is one such site that allows multiplayers from all around to play a decent game of online bingo at just the touch of a button.
Regardless of whether you’re looking for a short game to refresh in between work or if you’re a serious gamer, the online gaming industry is booming with new players each day. In fact, Forbes listed Asia as a developing leader in the world of online gaming, which is saying something about the shift in trends where it pertains the interest of the youth generation in these regions. It is this promising economic potential in online gaming that has attracted the attention of gamers, developers and mega companies to turn their sights on to investing in these ventures.
Many people wear hats of different shapes and colors in their lives. While most parents and business owners might just consider those hats to be a necessary part of a work outfit or a fashion statement, on the Internet, specifically with Internet marketing, they have a very different meaning.
Knowing the differences between the “hat” colors and the risks you take when you chose one over the other will help keep you out of Google death as you attempt to manipulate search engines. Google has a very short tolerance for unethical practices that attempt to work around their rules.
It is commonly agreed upon that the safest techniques to follow in your marketing campaigns are the White Hat strategies. If you remember the old cowboy movies where the hero always wore the white hat and triumphed over the bad guys who wore black hats, you will see the implied differences in hat colors.
White Hat
A marketer using white hat techniques is not malicious in intent or actual practice. They follow business practices that are considered ethical and acceptable by the industry and do nothing that could be considered spamming others. They are not trying to find and exploit loopholes in the systems.
Grey Hat
Practices start veering off the benign white hat techniques when marketers start pushing the edges of legality and use somewhat shady methods to get what they want on other sites or to get around Google’s rules. Some of these techniques used might be reverse engineering of copyrighted or trademarked software, or copying small sections of articles and passing them off as their own. They may have found a loophole that will be closed once Google figures out what they are doing.
Blue Hat
This term is used by firms involved in computer security and refers to hackers hired to unearth bugs in a system before it is launched. When the blue hat hackers find unprotected areas of a client’s security, they quickly close the hole in the company’s software or report it to the security team.
Black Hat
A black hat can be a person who breaks computer security without permission to vandalize a site, steal credit card information, steal identities or pirate another marketer’s proprietary information or processes. A black hat marketer is someone who participates in illegal ways of getting better search engine rankings including keyword stuffing, spamdexing, spam linking, scraped content and article spinning of copyrighted material, hidden website links, excessive cross-linking, etc., that is for rank gain rather than for a better user experience.
Again, it is usually better to keep your White Hat on or you’ll always be looking over your shoulder for the Google police. If you’re wearing a Black Hat, you may find yourself with a spike in results, but it won’t last and is not a steady income you can count on.
I’ve been an Aviary user for a few years. Their in-browser photo editing apps were very user-friendly, fun, free, and now they are available for the mobile devices too. When I got this email, I jumped on over to Google Play to check it out. The Aviary Android app works well on my Droid phone. So well, I’ve been taking lots of random photos, just to see how they look with assorted enhancements and effects. Take this hallway photo for example:

Honestly, my digital camera has been collecting dust lately, with all the fun photo apps there are out there. I’ve used Instagram, Photoshop Express, Cymera, Afterfocus, Camera360 and now Aviary. I seem to use Instagram and Aviary the most. I like that they make it easy to share on my social networks and blogs too. It’s just fun stuff and for the social photography like me, who likes to snap up photos of my family, pets, and life events to record and share – the mobile camera and apps are working out just fine.
The Aviary mobile app is free and comes with a couple of default filters. If you want more, like “Grunge”, “Nostalgia” or stickers there is a small fee of 99 cents. I went ahead and bought them.. it’s 99 cents after all. So now, I’m off to shoot some more pictures to play with. Hope you do too!
Instagram has been around for a couple of years, but made big news just recently, when it was acquired by Facebook. This already established community of people who enjoy taking and sharing photos with their smartphones is sure to grow larger yet. Count me in as one of it’s newest members.
I use Instagram on my Android smartphone. My Droid has a great camera, and Instagram is a fast, fun application that transforms my ordinary photos, into more interesting ones! You don’t have to have photo editing experience or any designs skills at all to use this app. Right after download, it’s ready to use, and it’s absolutely free.
From Instagram (www.instagr.am): “Snap a picture, choose a filter to transform its look and feel, then post to Instagram. Share to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr too – it’s as easy as pie. It’s photo sharing, reinvented.”
Enjoy Instagram’s free photo editing toold on your iphone or android phone today!
