I took a couple of new photos to update my Facebook today, and while I was at it, I had some fun turning one of my photos into a something more festive for this Halloween. I used Picnik, which is a real easy to use photo design application online. You do not need to register to use it, but there are perks if you do – for example; being able to work with multiple photos, instead of just one at a time. Picnik offers a lot of fun tools for free, from photo frames, stickers, lots of holiday and sports items, interesting effects and collage design.
. Picnik also offers a “Premium” option now. It starts at a little over 2 bucks a month, but gives you access to many more design choices, stickers, fonts, effects, advanced editing features, history and connections. For the occasional user, I can see the free version being good enough and it doesn’t jip you on the fun factor. Even if you aren’t into all the silly little stickers or face painting (as in my “football fan” look to the right) or festive holiday add-ons; Picnik can service as simple, on the go, photo editor.. with it’s photo “touch-up”, flattering effects and resizing options.
. I used the “Orton-ish” effect on the photo to the left. I liked the way it contrasted the colors more, also softened the focus and added more highlight. Hek, you can even whiten your teeth in picnik and who couldn’t use that?!
One of the workshops I teach is photography and I plan to have my students visit picnik every now and then. I think they will love it and make good use of the free photo editing tools and creative design effects. I really think it’s a great free design app, but what do you think? Chime in and leave your 2-cents.
Have fun!
